Zak Mallen (Underwriting)

I joined Aspen in 2007 after graduating from the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne with a bachelors degree in Law. In truth, I hadn't aimed directly for reinsurance but as good luck would have it, I stumbled upon the UK's best kept industry.

I was instantly impressed by the company's direction and with the experience of the US Casualty team. Aspen is a young company with great aspirations and dynamic people. Crucially, they were genuinely interested in my career development.

Underwriting appealed to me as the role demands a variety and balance of skills from technical pricing to relationship management. As an Underwriting Assistant I get a great deal of interaction with brokers and clients, allowing me to view the negotiation process first hand. This has proved fascinating and although it's a long way from where you initially start, it's great to see underwriters and brokers negotiating over terms, whilst you learn your trade

The education process has been continuous from day one, whether it be on the grad scheme or studying for ACII qualifications. I have also had opportunities to travel to the US on broker-sponsored training courses and Aspen have fully backed my development. This support plus the professional, yet relaxed working environment mean I enjoy coming to work, which is about as much as you can ask for.
